up to down

From right up in Harlem yesterday (Masterchef Australia inspired me to go visit the 'heart of southern cooking in NYC'), all the way down to Chinatown today, Carly (a close Australian friend staying with me at the moment) and I have had the diversity of this city THRUST in our face. Carly, having only spent a few days here about 5 years ago, is finding the blatant, unbridled rudeness and attitude of some people (keyword SOME, today a lovely man offered her some of his mini cakes out of a brown paper bag he had just bought) a little.....overwhelming. Yesterday, the ticket machines in the subway where we were trying to catch a train were broken, so people went up to the workers inside the station in the booths to help. These women literally did not raise their head to multiple New Yorkers yelling and waving at them, trying to get their attention. It was actually quite incredible to watch really, it takes a severely confident person to shut someone down like that!

On the flip side, the pure dynamism of Chinatown was infectious, and we had the best day wondering down Canal Street, buying bargain stationary and fruit. My craving for dumplings was satisfied at 'Excellent Dumping House' on Lafayette street, as was our desire for a cheap (and tasty) meal.

week one: finding my new york feet (round two)...

And 'the dream' begins: to be studying fashion and to be living in New York City, an insanely popular travel destination worldwide. Now, New York as my home, feels surreal.  However, I have always felt at 'home' here. I can confidently say I have been in delayed shock since being accepted into Parsons New School of Design in March, the day after my 22nd birthday.

Boring things like picking up my student card, opening a U.S. bank account and buying a proper phone plan have taken up my time so far, but have managed not to seem so boring as they reinforce the fact that I am staying. Not jetting off to some other city like you would normally be when visiting this city. I'm putting down roots...

In one sense I feel like I was just here yesterday (even though I left here 9 months ago from my last visit), and in another I am aware that I feel slightly ungrounded...being semi-homeless tends to breed unease! I am hoping to find my 'New York feet' again (as one friend described as 'wearing heels') quickly...

FYI: I am doing a Masters of Fashion Studies, NOT Fashion Design.

soak it up

I have been so sick of the horrible humidity paired with stormy wind and rain of the past few days…come on fall, hurry up and take over New York!  (my 6 beautiful coats are still waiting to be shown the streets of NY…) Now, finally able to soak up the sun rather than ‘be’ soaking, it truly feels like fall today. I find it incredible that the days where I choose to do the simplest things here often turn out to be the loveliest...I think my expectations of New York were that if you aren’t trying to do about 7 things at once, your day has been a waste.  The elusiveness of time here definitely makes it feel this way…I always seem to be running 30 minutes behind!

So, people watching with Marnie at Tompkins Square Park seemed to be the perfect antithesis to this NYC fast-forward lifestyle.  Old Greek women with walking sticks, cigarette smoking musicians lounging on the hill, gay men with tiny dogs and a noisy outdoor karate lesson for kids were only some of the diverse individuals taking part in the East Village community lifestyle.  Iced coffee and green tea in hand, we ourselves became part of this dynamic setting.

The perfect hangover cure lunch of an egg sandwich (my first ever!) and poached eggs on English muffins inspired Marnie to lead me toward my first (and only) addiction in the city…’Lulu’s Sweet Apothecary’.  I had been complaining how much I miss ice cream because I don’t eat dairy, so she took me to this vegan (so all non-dairy) ice-cream shop where everything is made out of cashews or soybeans. There are the most amazing flavours, including soft serve and a ‘drumstick’ flavour!  Chocolate choc-chip was my go to choice…but Marnie’s soft serve ‘twist’ with candied pecans was incredible. I am expecting many freezing yet amazing afternoons of sitting in the cold as fall sets in, eating ice-cream on the wooden bench in front of Lulu’s.

i can go home now

Spotted, Lady Gaga at the Plaza Oak Bar last night. She glided in and out in with her entourage wearing a fish-net style dress with blonde hair coming out from all over it...and huge Alexander McQueen high heels (with the heels on she was about my height). After the delayed shock of seeing her, I could have happily (well...not so happily, but happier than I would have otherwise been) flown back to Sydney now satisfied with seeing the one 'celebrity' I wanted to run into.
